‘A thread runs through it’ and ‘Awakening’
Our lives are made up of a patchwork of experiences, held together by the threads of our consciousness, making us who we are, allowing us to grow. While our genetic make-up plays a large part in how we deal with life, our immediate environment has a huge effect in who we are and what we become. Many are disconnected from themselves; while others simply watch their lives unfold at a distance, allowing themselves to be manipulated by those around them.
In her three dimensional piece, ‘A thread runs through it’, Monique has created a patchwork of fynbos monotypes, stitched together to form a fabric from which a figure is cut and placed behind the main sections, offering an opportunity for people to be present, in the moment, to playfully connect with themselves and the viewer by placing themselves between the figures, and asking themselves how they fit into their world.
In her complimentary narrative to Monique’s work, Leila’s ‘Awakening’ gives a visual representation to the human realisation of our place in the world - specifically the natural environment that surrounds us. Highlighting the awakening of an enlightened consciousness, she reminds us that our presence and even our thoughts affect our experience of the outer world.
